What Is the Rosary?
The Rosary is a meditative prayer built around the life of Jesus and Mary. You move through a series of beads, repeating vocal prayers while reflecting on specific events from Scripture called "mysteries." It is not mindless repetition. The repeated prayers create a rhythm that frees your mind to contemplate what God has done. Think of it like a soundtrack playing beneath a film. The words carry you while the mysteries tell the story. Pope Paul VI called it "a compendium of the entire Gospel" (Marialis Cultus, 42). The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes it as a prayer that "accompanies the confession of our faith" (CCC 971).
What You Need Before You Start
You need a rosary (the physical beads) and about 15 to 20 minutes. A standard rosary has five decades, each made up of one large bead and ten small beads, connected in a loop with a short tail ending in a crucifix. You can buy one at any Catholic bookstore, or find free ones at most parishes. If you do not have beads, you can use your fingers or a rosary app. The beads are a tool, not a requirement. The Prayers You Will Use
Four prayers make up the backbone of the Rosary. The Sign of the Cross opens and closes it. The Our Father (the Lord's Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13) is prayed on each large bead. The Hail Mary, drawn from Luke 1:28 and Luke 1:42, is prayed on each small bead, ten per decade. The Glory Be (a short praise of the Trinity) closes each decade. You may also add the Fatima Prayer after the Glory Be: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy." Step by Step: Praying One Decade
Hold the crucifix and make the Sign of the Cross. On the first large bead after the crucifix, pray the Apostles' Creed. Then pray one Our Father, three Hail Marys (for faith, hope, and charity), and one Glory Be on the introductory beads. Now you reach the loop. Announce the first mystery, then pray one Our Father on the large bead. Move through the ten small beads, praying one Hail Mary on each while thinking about the mystery. Close the decade with a Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer. Repeat for each of the five decades, announcing a new mystery before each one. After the fifth decade, pray the Hail Holy Queen and make the Sign of the Cross.
