The principal Marian shrine of Venezuela, on Margarita Island, where fishermen and sailors have prayed to the patroness of eastern Venezuela since the seventeenth century.
Margarita Island sits in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela, and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Valley sits in the town of El Valle del Espiritu Santo, built on a hill above palm trees and dry scrubland. The devotion goes back to the early 1600s, when a small statue of the Virgin was found — or, depending on who tells it, appeared — and the local people built a chapel for her. The current basilica is nineteenth century, neoclassical with twin towers and white-painted walls that stand out against the blue sky. Inside, the Virgin del Valle is displayed above the altar in a glass case, dressed in elaborate robes that are changed for feast days. She is small, dark-skinned, holding the child Jesus, and surrounded by offerings from fishermen, sailors, and soldiers who credit her with their survival. The walls of the side chapels are covered with silver milagros — small metal charms shaped like boats, legs, hearts, babies — left as thanks for prayers answered. The devotion is deeply tied to the sea. Fishermen still bring their boats to be blessed on her feast day, September 8, and the celebration shuts down the island for a week.

What to See
The statue of the Virgin del Valle is the center of everything — she stands above the main altar, small and dark and richly dressed, with a crown and rays of light behind her. The milagros in the side chapels are worth studying closely; they tell the stories of the petitioners — boat-shaped charms from fishermen, heart-shaped ones from the lovesick, limb-shaped ones from the injured. The basilica's interior is bright and clean, with neoclassical columns and a painted ceiling. A small museum adjacent to the church displays centuries of offerings, vestments, and historical documents related to the devotion.

Margarita Island is reached by ferry from Puerto La Cruz or Cumaná, or by flights from Caracas. Check current conditions in Venezuela before traveling — the political and economic situation affects availability of services. The basilica is in the town of El Valle, reachable by taxi from Porlamar or other island towns. Mass is celebrated daily. The feast of Our Lady of the Valley on September 8 is the biggest event on the island and draws pilgrims from across Venezuela — expect crowds, processions, music, and fireworks for several days. The island is tropical year-round; bring sun protection and water.
