The Romanesque basilica in Burgundy where St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received the visions of the Sacred Heart in the seventeenth century, making this small town one of the most important pilgrimage sites in France.
Paray-le-Monial is a small town in southern Burgundy, and it would be largely unknown if not for what happened at the Visitation convent here between 1673 and 1675. A young nun named Margaret Mary Alacoque reported a series of visions in which Christ revealed his Sacred Heart and asked for a devotion of reparation and love. Her confessor, the Jesuit Claude de la Colombière, believed her and helped spread the message. The devotion to the Sacred Heart eventually became one of the most widespread in the Catholic world, and Paray-le-Monial became its point of origin. The basilica itself predates the visions by centuries. It was built in the twelfth century as a Cluniac priory church and is considered a smaller-scale model of the great abbey church at Cluny, most of which was demolished after the Revolution. The proportions are pure Romanesque: rounded arches, a barrel-vaulted nave, an ambulatory with radiating chapels, and a crossing tower. The stone is a warm golden limestone typical of Burgundy. The Visitation Chapel where the visions occurred is a separate building nearby, and pilgrims visit both. The town fills with visitors during summer pilgrimage season and is quiet the rest of the year.

What to See
Start at the basilica itself — the Romanesque interior is calm and harmonious, with the barrel vault drawing your eye toward the apse. The carved capitals on the nave columns depict biblical and vegetal scenes. The ambulatory behind the altar allows you to walk around the apse in the manner of medieval pilgrims. After visiting the basilica, walk to the Visitation Chapel, which preserves the space where St. Margaret Mary experienced the visions. The chapel contains relics and a reconstruction of the scene. A small park and museum nearby provide context on the Sacred Heart devotion and its spread throughout the Catholic world.
Pilgrim Notes
Paray-le-Monial is in southern Burgundy, about an hour west of Mâcon and two hours north of Lyon by car. The town has a train station with regional connections. Accommodation is available in town, though options are limited outside of summer. The major pilgrimage season runs from June through September, with organized retreats and gatherings. Outside of those months, the basilica and chapel are open but the town is quieter. The nearby Abbey of Cluny — what remains of it — is about forty-five minutes east and makes a logical paired visit.
