You cross the quad and there it is — the steeple rising above the oaks and the golden dome, a church that looks like it belongs in a French village but landed in northern Indiana. Inside, the painted murals cover every inch of wall and ceiling, created by Vatican-trained Luigi Gregori in the 1870s and 1880s. The effect is warm and almost overwhelming, like stepping inside an illuminated manuscript. The main nave seats over a thousand, but somehow it still feels like a parish church where people actually pray, not just visit. And they do — students, faculty, families from town fill the pews at daily Mass. The side chapels hold quiet altars and kneelers, and the Lady Chapel behind the main altar has a softness to it that draws people back. The Gregori murals demand a slow walk down both side aisles — scenes from the Old and New Testaments painted with a delicacy that rewards close looking. The stained glass windows were made in the workshops of Carmel-du-Mans in France and shipped to Indiana in the 1870s. The Lady Chapel behind the sanctuary is a favorite spot for quiet prayer. The exterior is worth circling; the east end and the steeple photograph beautifully against the campus trees, especially in autumn.

Mass is celebrated multiple times daily during the academic year and the basilica is open to all visitors. On football Saturdays, expect a packed morning Mass. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a beloved campus prayer spot, is a short walk from the basilica's front steps. The campus itself is worth exploring — the golden dome of the Main Building and the reflecting pool by the library are iconic. South Bend has a regional airport, or you can drive from Chicago in about ninety minutes.
