The mother church of the Archdiocese of Denver, a French Gothic Revival cathedral that has anchored the city's Catholic life since 1912, elevated to minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.
Denver's cathedral sits at the corner of Colfax and Logan, facing the gold dome of the Colorado State Capitol across a wide boulevard. It was built between 1902 and 1912, designed by Leon Coquard in a French Gothic style using Indiana limestone. The twin spires rise 210 feet and are visible from blocks away, standing out against the Front Range skyline. Inside, the nave is surprisingly tall for a city church, with ribbed vaulting, pointed arches, and seventy-five stained glass windows made by the Royal Bavarian Art Institute in Munich. The windows are the real treasure here — they fill the interior with colored light on sunny Colorado mornings and depict scenes from Scripture and the lives of saints. The marble altars and communion rail are original. The cathedral went through a major restoration in 2010, and the work was done carefully, cleaning the limestone and repairing the windows without changing the character of the building. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass here during his 1993 visit for World Youth Day, which brought an enormous crowd to the surrounding blocks. The parish remains active and busy, serving a downtown congregation.

What to See
The stained glass windows are the highlight. Visit on a bright morning when the eastern windows are lit up — the Munich glasswork has a depth of color that is hard to photograph but striking in person. The main altar and reredos are carved marble in a Gothic style that matches the architecture. The Stations of the Cross are painted panels worth a slow walk around the nave. The exterior is best seen from across Colfax Avenue, where you can take in the full height of the spires against the sky.
