The cathedral sits on the Praça da Independência in downtown Maputo, white and angular, with a facade that mixes Art Deco geometry with tropical practicality — louvered windows to let the Indian Ocean breeze through, thick walls to hold back the heat. It was built in 1944, when Mozambique was still under Portuguese rule, and consecrated as a cathedral in 1953. The interior is bright and open, with a high vaulted ceiling and stained glass that throws colored light across the white walls. What makes this place matter is not the architecture but the people. Mozambique's Catholics survived a colonial system that used the Church as a tool of empire, then survived a Marxist government that tried to dismantle the Church entirely, then survived a civil war that killed a million people. The facade is striking from the plaza — white concrete with geometric patterns and a tall central tower topped with a cross. Inside, the nave is airy and uncluttered, letting the stained glass and the congregation's energy be the main impressions. The stations of the cross are simple and modern. The side altars have statues dressed in fabric, a common Southern African practice. The real experience is attending Sunday Mass, where the singing is extraordinary — full-throated, polyphonic, often accompanied by drums and clapping. The plaza outside the cathedral is a gathering point after Mass, and the atmosphere is social and warm.
