La Laguna's cathedral sits in the UNESCO-listed old town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the former capital of Tenerife. The present Neoclassical building was completed in 1913, replacing an earlier church on the same site. The facade is grey stone with a broad pediment and paired columns. Inside, the nave has marble floors, a coffered ceiling, and a carved wooden pulpit from the older church. The cathedral holds the tomb of Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the conquistador who founded the city in 1496. The Canary Islands are a crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, and this cathedral reflects that — it feels Spanish but sits in the Atlantic, with African light and trade winds.
