Plaza de la Catedral, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain
Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna
The cathedral of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife, a Neoclassical church in the Canary Islands that holds the remains of the founder of the city.
La Laguna's cathedral sits in the UNESCO-listed old town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the former capital of Tenerife. The present Neoclassical building was completed in 1913, replacing an earlier church on the same site. The facade is grey stone with a broad pediment and paired columns. Inside, the nave has marble floors, a coffered ceiling, and a carved wooden pulpit from the older church. The cathedral holds the tomb of Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the conquistador who founded the city in 1496. The Canary Islands are a crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, and this cathedral reflects that — it feels Spanish but sits in the Atlantic, with African light and trade winds.
Diocese: Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Style: Neoclassical
What to See
The carved pulpit from the older church is the standout piece. The tomb of Fernández de Lugo adds historical weight. Walk the old town afterward — the grid layout of La Laguna was used as a model for colonial cities across Latin America.
Pilgrim Notes
Mass is offered daily in Spanish. La Laguna is connected to Santa Cruz de Tenerife by tram. The old town is excellent for walking, with convents, churches, and colonial mansions on every block.
