Cathedral of San Miguel Arcangel
The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, an eighteenth-century Baroque church on the central plaza whose ornate altarpiece and colonial-era artwork represent the finest religious art in Central America.
Tegucigalpa's cathedral was built between 1765 and 1782 and dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, the city's patron. It faces the Plaza Morazan in the center of the capital, a busy, noisy square surrounded by commercial buildings and street vendors. The exterior is late colonial Baroque — a decorated facade with pilasters, niches with saints, and a clock tower added in the nineteenth century. The interior is where the cathedral earns its reputation. The main altarpiece is a gilded Baroque retablo that fills the entire back wall of the sanctuary, intricately carved and covered in gold leaf, with statues of saints arranged in tiers. It is one of the finest colonial altarpieces still standing in Central America. The side altars are also gilded, and the church holds several colonial-era paintings and polychrome statues of notable quality. The baptismal font is original eighteenth-century silver. Honduras is the poorest country in Central America, and the cathedral reflects that reality — maintenance is ongoing and resources are limited. But the building persists, and the gilded altarpiece glows in the dim interior as it has for nearly 250 years.

What to See
The main altarpiece is the reason to visit. Let your eyes adjust to the dim light, and the gold leaf will begin to glow — the carving is elaborate and the effect is powerful. The side altars are worth individual attention. Look for the colonial-era paintings, which include work by local artists trained in the Spanish tradition. The silver baptismal font near the entrance is a fine piece of colonial metalwork. The facade is best seen from across the plaza.

The cathedral is on the main plaza of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. Be aware of security conditions — Tegucigalpa requires common-sense travel precautions. The cathedral is open during the day and Mass is offered daily. The nearby Church of Los Dolores, a few blocks east, is another colonial-era church with a notable facade. The feast of San Miguel on September 29 is celebrated with particular devotion here.
