Queen Street, Singapore
Cathedral of the Good Shepherd
Singapore's oldest Catholic church still in use, a graceful Neo-Classical building completed in 1847 that has served the city-state's Catholic community through colonial rule, Japanese occupation, and rapid modernization.
The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd was completed in 1847, making it one of the oldest buildings in Singapore and the oldest Catholic church still standing in the city. The architect, Denis McSwiney, designed it in a restrained Neo-Classical style — a pedimented portico with Doric columns, symmetrical wings, and a bell tower rising over the entrance. The building is made of brick covered in plaster, painted white, and it sits in the middle of Singapore's civic district, surrounded by government buildings, courts, and modern towers. Inside, the space is simple and elegant: a long nave with timber-beamed ceilings, plaster columns, and clear glass windows that let in the equatorial light. The altar and sanctuary were renovated in the 1970s and again in the early 2000s. The church was gazetted as a National Monument in 1973. Through colonial rule under the British, Japanese occupation during World War II, independence in 1965, and the explosive growth that followed, the cathedral has remained the seat of the Archbishop and the heart of Catholic life in Singapore. The Catholic population is about 400,000 — significant in a country of under six million.
Diocese: Archdiocese of Singapore
Style: Neo-Classical
What to See
The Neo-Classical facade is best seen from across Queen Street, where the pediment and columns are framed by the modern city rising behind. Inside, the timber-beamed ceiling and plaster columns give the nave a clean, colonial-era character. The sanctuary is modest and devotional. The churchyard and grounds offer a pocket of green space in an otherwise dense urban environment. The building's age is remarkable in Singapore, where so little from the nineteenth century survives — standing inside, you are in one of the city's oldest interior spaces.
Pilgrim Notes
The cathedral is on Queen Street in the civic district, a short walk from the Bras Basah MRT station. Singapore's public transit system is excellent and will get you to the door. The church is open daily and Mass is offered in English, Mandarin, and Tamil. The civic district around the cathedral includes the National Museum, Fort Canning Park, and the Armenian Church of St. Gregory — another early colonial-era church worth seeing. Singapore's CHIJMES complex, a former convent school now converted to a dining and event space, is nearby and shows another face of the city's Catholic heritage.
