Ethiopia's Catholic cathedral is a humbling place to visit, and that is exactly the point. In a country where Christianity arrived in the fourth century — centuries before most of Europe converted — the Roman Catholic community is a small minority alongside the vast Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The cathedral was built during the Italian occupation in the 1930s, a history that makes it complicated. The Italians brought their architects and built a modest church in a simplified Romanesque style with stucco walls, a tile roof, and a small bell tower. After liberation, the building stayed and the community grew slowly, mostly among Italians who remained and Ethiopians who joined over time. Inside, the church is simple and clean — white walls, wooden pews, a marble altar, and a few icons that nod to the Ethiopian artistic tradition of flat, vivid figures with large eyes. Addis Ababa's Catholic community includes Latin-rite and Ge'ez-rite (Ethiopian Catholic) faithful, and the cathedral hosts both traditions. The building sits in the Piazza area of the city, the old Italian quarter, surrounded by shops and traffic. It does not compete with the great Orthodox churches of Ethiopia — it does not try to.

If you can attend a Ge'ez-rite liturgy here, the ancient Ethiopian Catholic Mass is a striking experience, with chant, incense, and ritual movement that predates most Western liturgical forms.
