Mombasa's cathedral sits on Nyerere Avenue on Mombasa Island, a simple but dignified mid-century building with an open, airy design suited to the tropical coast. Catholicism arrived in Mombasa with the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, though the present community dates mostly to the nineteenth-century mission work of the Holy Ghost Fathers. The cathedral was built in 1956 and reflects its era — clean lines, an open sanctuary, and louvered windows that let the Indian Ocean breeze through during Mass. The congregation is a mix of Swahili-speaking coastal Kenyans, Goan-descended families, and more recent arrivals from upcountry. Masses are offered in English, Swahili, and occasionally Goan Konkani.
