Holy Redeemer sits on North Front Street in Belize City, a few blocks from the sea, painted white with a small bell tower, looking more like a sturdy parish church than a cathedral. That's because it is — Belize's Catholic community is small, and this building reflects the scale honestly. The original church was built by Jesuits in the 1850s when Belize was British Honduras, and the current structure dates to the 1940s after hurricane damage. Inside, the space is clean and bright with wooden pews, ceiling fans turning slowly overhead, and stained glass that catches the Caribbean light. The congregation is a mix of Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna, Maya, and Mennonite parishioners — possibly the most ethnically diverse single parish in Central America. Mass is in English, which makes this an unusual church in the region, though Spanish and Kriol are heard in the pews before and after. The Jesuits who built it served the entire colony from this spot, running schools and hospitals when no one else would. Hurricane Hattie in 1961 flooded the building. They cleaned it out and reopened. That's the pattern here: storm, repair, carry on.

The nearby St. John's Cathedral (Anglican) is the oldest surviving colonial building in the country and makes for an interesting comparison.
