Las Lajas Sanctuary
A stunning Gothic Revival basilica built into a canyon wall in southern Colombia, spanning a river gorge 100 meters deep.
You round the last bend in the mountain road and the church just appears — a gray stone Gothic structure growing out of the rock face of a deep green canyon, a bridge arching beneath it over the Guaitara River far below. It looks impossible, like something from a dream about medieval Europe transplanted to the Colombian highlands. The story goes that in 1754 a woman and her deaf-mute daughter were caught in a storm near this canyon, and the child suddenly spoke, pointing to an image of the Virgin that had appeared on the rock wall. That rock face is now the altarpiece of the church — the stone itself, with the painted image of Mary holding the Christ child, forms the back wall of the sanctuary. You don't look at a painting hung on a wall; you look at the mountain. The interior is narrow and vertical, all pointed arches and stained glass filtering green-gold light. Outside, the walkways and bridges offer views that make your stomach drop. Pilgrims come from across Colombia and Ecuador, leaving prayers written on plaques that cover every surface of the canyon approach.

What to See
The approach itself is part of the experience — walking down the canyon path past thousands of plaques and offerings left by pilgrims. The sanctuary interior is surprisingly intimate given the dramatic setting; the miraculous image on the rock face behind the altar is the focus. Cross the bridge to the opposite side of the gorge for the classic photograph of the full church spanning the canyon. The waterfall that runs beneath the bridge adds to the sense that this place exists at the edge of the natural and the sacred.
Pilgrim Notes
Las Lajas is about seven kilometers from the city of Ipiales in far southern Colombia, near the Ecuadorian border. Taxis and buses run regularly from Ipiales. The sanctuary is free to enter and Mass is celebrated daily. The feast of Our Lady of Las Lajas on September 16th draws the largest crowds. The altitude is around 2,600 meters, so dress warmly — the canyon funnels cold air. Visitors coming from Ecuador can cross the border at the Rumichaca bridge and reach the sanctuary in about thirty minutes.
