Metropolitan Cathedral of Guatemala City
The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Guatemala, a Neoclassical church in the capital's central plaza that has withstood repeated earthquakes and serves as a memorial to the victims of the Guatemalan Civil War.
Guatemala City's cathedral was built between 1782 and 1815, after the capital moved from Antigua Guatemala following the devastating Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773. The architects learned their lesson — the new cathedral was designed with thick walls and a low, heavy profile to resist seismic damage. The style is restrained Neoclassical: a plain facade with columns and a triangular pediment, twin bell towers that are wide rather than tall, and an overall impression of solidity rather than ornament. Inside, the nave is broad with barrel vaulting and heavy piers. The main altar is marble, and the side chapels contain colonial-era art rescued from Antigua's ruined churches, including polychrome statues and silver processional crosses. The cathedral faces the Parque Central, the administrative heart of the city, flanked by the National Palace and government buildings. In front of the cathedral, twelve columns stand as a memorial listing the names of victims who disappeared during the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), a conflict in which the Catholic Church paid dearly — catechists, priests, and an entire bishop were among those killed. The building carries that history quietly.
Diocese: Archdiocese of Guatemala
Style: Neoclassical (earthquake-resistant design)
What to See
The memorial columns in front of the cathedral are impossible to walk past without stopping — the names carved into them represent real people. Inside, the colonial-era statues and silver work saved from Antigua are the artistic highlights. The broad, heavy nave has a calm feel despite the busy plaza outside. The main altar is simple marble. Walk the side chapels for the best of the rescued art. The exterior is best appreciated for what it communicates: this is a building designed to survive.
Pilgrim Notes
The cathedral is in Zona 1, the historic center of Guatemala City. The area is busy during the day; exercise standard urban precautions. The cathedral is open daily and Mass is offered regularly. If you have time, Antigua Guatemala is about an hour from the capital by car or bus and has some of the most atmospheric ruined churches in the Americas. Holy Week in Antigua is one of the great Catholic celebrations in the world, with elaborate street carpets and massive processions.
