Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral
The largest Catholic church in the Arabian Peninsula, consecrated in 2021 in Bahrain, a striking contemporary structure that serves a Catholic population made up almost entirely of migrant workers from Asia and Africa.
In December 2021, Bahrain consecrated the largest Catholic church on the Arabian Peninsula — a bold, modern structure in the city of Awali that seats 2,300 people. The project took years of negotiation and planning, and its completion was remarkable given the region. Bahrain has a long history of relative religious tolerance among Gulf states, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa donated the land. The design, by Spanish-Italian firm Ceballos & Associates, is contemporary and restrained: a white exterior with clean geometric forms, a soaring interior with a concrete shell roof, and a bell tower visible across the flat desert landscape. Inside, the altar is set against a large cross that rises behind it, and natural light enters through carefully placed openings. The congregation is almost entirely made up of migrant workers — Filipinos, Indians, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, Nigerians, and others who have come to the Gulf for work. Sunday Masses are offered in English, Tagalog, Malayalam, Sinhala, and other languages. The cathedral is the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia, which covers Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

What to See
The building is striking from outside — white geometric forms rising from the flat Bahraini landscape, with a bell tower that serves as a landmark. Inside, the soaring concrete roof and clean lines create a contemplative space that feels both modern and sacred. The altar and cross are the focal point. The building's engineering manages the extreme Gulf heat while maintaining a sense of openness. The most moving experience is attending a Sunday Mass, where the congregation — drawn from a dozen countries — fills the church to capacity.

The cathedral is in Awali, a town in central Bahrain about twenty minutes from the capital Manama. Taxis and ride-share apps are available throughout the island. Mass times vary by language — check the vicariate website for the current schedule. Bahrain is accessible by air from most major cities and by causeway from Saudi Arabia. The island is small and easy to navigate. The Sacred Heart Church in Manama, built in 1939, is the older Catholic church on the island and worth a visit for historical context.
