San Fernando Cathedral
The oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States, standing at the heart of San Antonio since 1738.
It sits right on the main plaza in downtown San Antonio, dwarfed now by hotels and office towers but still holding the center. The original stone walls of the 1738 sanctuary are still here, visible from inside, built by Canary Island settlers who came to this stretch of the San Antonio River to start a new life. The Gothic Revival facade was added later, in the 1870s, giving the cathedral a face that reads as old European, but the real age is in the bones behind it. Jim Bowie and other Alamo defenders are said to be interred in a marble sarcophagus near the altar. The interior is modest by European standards — painted walls, carved wooden altars, an intimate nave — but it carries a weight that comes from continuous use. This is not a preserved museum piece. Masses in English and Spanish fill the building every week. Quinceañeras, funerals, baptisms cycle through like breathing. Stand on the plaza at dusk when the light show projects across the facade and you see the whole layered history of San Antonio moving on the stone.

What to See
Look for the original 1738 sanctuary walls — they form the rear portion of the current building and are visibly older than the Gothic Revival front. The marble sarcophagus near the altar containing what are believed to be remains of Alamo defenders is marked with a plaque. The carved wooden retablos behind the altar reflect the Spanish Colonial heritage of the parish. The main plaza outside provides the best view of the full facade. The San Antonio River Walk is just a block away.

The cathedral is open daily and free to enter. Mass is celebrated multiple times each day in both English and Spanish. It sits at the center of San Antonio's tourist district, making it easy to combine with visits to the Alamo (four blocks east) and the River Walk. The evening light show, 'The Saga,' projected onto the facade, runs on certain nights and tells the story of San Antonio's founding — check the schedule locally. Parking is available in nearby garages. The cathedral is a working parish, so be respectful during services.
