St. Peter's Basilica
The largest church in the world and the spiritual center of Catholicism, built over the tomb of St. Peter.
You step through the bronze doors and the space just swallows you whole. The nave stretches so far ahead that the people near the altar look like children. Sunlight pours through the dome — Michelangelo's dome — and lands on the marble floor in wide golden pools. Everything here is enormous, but somehow it doesn't feel cold. The Pietà sits behind glass to your right, and even from a distance, Mary's face stops you. Bernini's baldachin rises over the papal altar like a bronze forest canopy, marking the spot where Peter's bones rest below. The silence surprises you. For all the tourists and cameras, there are always people kneeling in prayer along the side chapels. You can descend to the grottoes beneath the basilica and stand near the tomb itself. Go up to the dome if your knees allow it — the view of Rome from the lantern is something you carry home.

What to See
Start with the Pietà, tucked in the first chapel on the right. Move down the nave and take in the sheer scale beneath the dome. Bernini's baldachin demands a long look — four twisting bronze columns framing the papal altar. In the grottoes below, you can visit the tombs of many popes, including John Paul II's simple stone slab. The climb to the dome cupola is 551 steps (or an elevator partway), but the interior view looking straight down into the basilica is staggering, and the rooftop panorama of St. Peter's Square and Rome beyond is unforgettable.
Pilgrim Notes
Mass is offered daily and the schedule is posted at the entrance. Arrive early — lines for security screening can stretch well past the colonnade by mid-morning. Dress code is enforced: covered shoulders and knees. The basilica is free to enter. Confession is available in many languages in the booths along the left side of the nave. If you visit on a Wednesday, the Pope's general audience is held in the square outside.
