World Youth Day in Panama, held January 22-27, 2019, was the first WYD in Central America. Pope Francis chose the theme 'I am the servant of the Lord' from Luke's account of the Annunciation, and the event drew over 700,000 young people from around the world to Panama City. The choice of Panama was itself a statement. Previous World Youth Days had been held in major global capitals — Madrid, Krakow, Rio de Janeiro. Panama was smaller, poorer, and further from the European centers of Catholic institutional power. Francis, the first pope from Latin America, wanted to signal that the Church's future was not only in Europe and North America. It was in the growing, youthful populations of Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
