Establishment of the Pontifical Biblical Commission

In 1902, Pope Leo XIII established the Pontifical Biblical Commission to guide Catholic scholarship on Scripture, navigating the tensions between modern historical-critical methods and the Church's teaching authority during a period of intense intellectual upheaval.

By the late 1800s, Catholic biblical scholarship was caught between two pressures. On one side, Protestant and secular scholars in Germany and France were applying historical-critical methods to the Bible — analyzing its literary sources, questioning traditional authorship, and reading biblical texts as products of specific historical circumstances. Some of their conclusions challenged long-held Catholic assumptions about who wrote certain books and when. On the other side, Catholic authorities were deeply suspicious of these methods, fearing they would undermine the authority of Scripture and the faith of ordinary believers. Pope Leo XIII had already waded into this debate with his 1893 encyclical Providentissimus Deus, which encouraged Catholic scholars to engage with modern learning while insisting on the divine inspiration of all Scripture. The Pontifical Biblical Commission, established by Leo's apostolic letter Vigilantiae Studiique in 1902, was meant to provide ongoing guidance. In its early decades, the Commission was cautious, issuing decisions that generally favored traditional positions on questions like the authorship of the Pentateuch and the Gospels. But over time, Catholic biblical scholarship matured, and the Commission's approach changed dramatically. By the mid-twentieth century, under Pius XII's encouragement in Divino Afflante Spiritu (1943), Catholic scholars were at the forefront of biblical research. The Commission's 1964 instruction on the historical truth of the Gospels acknowledged the use of literary forms and editorial activity by the Gospel writers. Today the Commission serves as a scholarly advisory body, and Catholic biblical scholarship is among the most respected in the world.

Why it matters

Formalized the Catholic Church's engagement with modern biblical scholarship, eventually helping Catholic Scripture studies become among the most respected in the academic world while maintaining the balance between critical methods and faith.
