Pietro Francesco Orsini was a Dominican who had repeatedly tried to refuse ecclesiastical promotions. As pope from 1724 to 1730, he continued living as a friar — sleeping on a simple bed, saying Mass daily in parishes, and holding provincial councils to reform discipline. Unfortunately, he was naive about governance and left too much power to his corrupt secretary of state, Cardinal Coscia. His personal holiness was genuine, but his administration suffered.
Why He Matters
Benedict XIII was a genuinely holy man who could not manage the people around him. His story is a reminder that personal sanctity and administrative competence are different gifts — and that a leader needs both.
