Honorius II

Approved the Knights Templar and the Premonstratensian Order, helping shape two of the most important institutions of the twelfth century.
Lamberto was from Bologna and became pope in 1124 after a contested election. He recognized the Knights Templar at the Council of Troyes in 1129, giving formal Church approval to the military order that would defend pilgrims in the Holy Land. He also approved Norbert of Xanten's Premonstratensian Order. His pontificate was consumed by the Norman conflicts in southern Italy.
Why He Matters
Honorius II's approval of the Knights Templar created one of the most famous and controversial institutions of the Middle Ages. His willingness to recognize new forms of religious life showed the Church's adaptability.
