A Dalmatian pope who ransomed captives from the Slavic invasions and defended Pope Honorius I's orthodoxy.
John IV was from Dalmatia (modern Croatia) and became pope in 640. He sent agents to ransom Christians captured during the Slavic and Avar invasions of his homeland. He also convened a synod to address Monothelitism and defended the memory of Honorius I against charges of heresy. His pontificate lasted less than two years.
