John VI was a Greek who became pope in 701. When the Byzantine exarch Theophylact marched on Rome, John negotiated to prevent violence. He also ransomed captives taken by the Lombards and used Church funds to protect the city. His three-year pontificate was one of quiet diplomatic skill in a dangerous era.
