A layman who bought the papacy and was consecrated through all holy orders in a single day, yet governed without major scandal.
Romanus was the brother of Benedict VIII and a member of the Tusculani family. He was a layman when elected pope in 1024, reportedly having purchased the office. He was ordained, consecrated, and enthroned all on the same day. Despite this inauspicious beginning, his pontificate was relatively uneventful. He crowned Conrad II as emperor in 1027 and managed Church affairs without major controversy. He died in 1032.
From Layman to Pope in a Day
John XIX went from layman to pope in twenty-four hours, skipping every step of the normal process. He bought the office with family money and was ordained at breakneck speed. By any standard, his election was a scandal. Yet he governed without causing further damage, which in the early eleventh century counted for something.
