Marcellus II

A reform-minded pope who kept his baptismal name but died after only twenty-two days, inspiring Palestrina's famous Mass.
Marcello Cervini was a serious scholar and reformer who had presided over sessions of the Council of Trent. Elected pope in April 1555, he refused to change his name — a sign of his intent to remain himself rather than play a role. He immediately began cutting costs and reforming the papal court. He died twenty-two days later. Palestrina composed his 'Missa Papae Marcelli' in his memory, one of the most famous pieces of sacred music ever written.
Why He Matters
Marcellus II had twenty-two days, but he made them count — or at least he inspired others. Palestrina's Mass in his honor became one of the great works of sacred music, proof that a life cut short can still echo forward.
