Marinus was a Roman who became pope in 942 under the patronage of Alberic II. He used the relative stability of Alberic's rule to pursue internal reform, working to restore discipline among the Roman clergy and supporting monastic renewal. He granted privileges to various monasteries and worked to improve the spiritual life of the city. He died in 946 after a quiet but constructive pontificate.
