Elected at the Council of Constance, he ended the Great Western Schism and reunited a Church that had been split three ways.

For nearly forty years, the Catholic Church had two and sometimes three men claiming to be pope. The Great Western Schism was not a theological dispute but a political catastrophe. National loyalties determined which pope you followed, and the scandal eroded trust in the papacy across Europe. The Council of Constance, after deposing or accepting the resignation of the rival claimants, elected Oddone Colonna as Martin V in 1417. He walked into a Church that was administratively shattered, financially ruined, and spiritually exhausted. He restored papal authority, rebuilt the Vatican's finances, got the papal court functioning again, and returned the papacy to Rome after decades of displacement. He was not flashy. He was competent, and that was exactly what the Church needed.

Ending the Schism

The Great Western Schism was the worst institutional crisis in Catholic history. Three rival popes, each with his own cardinals and national backers, made the Church a laughingstock. Martin V didn't end it with dramatic gestures. He ended it by being accepted as legitimate by everyone and then patiently rebuilding the institution from the ground up.

The Quiet Work of Restoration

Martin V's real achievement was administrative. He re-established the Roman curia, recovered Church revenues, repaired relations with secular governments, and made the papacy functional again. None of this is exciting, but all of it was necessary. The Church needed a manager, and Martin V delivered.
