Fought the Investiture Controversy for nearly two decades, was captured by Emperor Henry V, and was forced to make concessions he later repudiated.
Raniero was a Cluniac monk who became pope in 1099. His long pontificate was dominated by the Investiture Controversy — the struggle over whether kings or popes had the right to appoint bishops. Emperor Henry V captured Paschal in 1111 and forced him to grant concessions. Once free, Paschal repudiated the agreement. The matter was not fully resolved until the Concordat of Worms in 1122, after his death.
Why He Matters
Paschal II spent his entire pontificate fighting for a principle: that the Church, not the emperor, should choose its own bishops. He was captured, humiliated, and forced to yield — but he took it all back and kept fighting. The principle eventually won.
