A brief pontificate of twenty months in which he addressed mixed marriages and the upheavals of 1830.
Francesco Castiglioni became pope in 1829 at age sixty-seven, already in poor health. His short pontificate saw him address the question of mixed marriages between Catholics and Protestants in Prussia and respond to the July Revolution of 1830 in France. He died in November 1830 after only twenty months. Despite his brevity, he upheld Catholic teaching on marriage with firmness and pastoral sensitivity.
Why He Matters
Pius VIII's brief pontificate came during a period of revolutionary upheaval. His handling of the mixed-marriage question in Prussia showed that even a pope with limited time could address practical pastoral problems that affected ordinary Catholics.
