St. Adrian III

A briefly reigning pope who died traveling to a Carolingian diet, later canonized by Pope Leo XIII.
Adrian III was a Roman who served as pope for about sixteen months in 884 to 885. He was summoned to attend a diet convened by Emperor Charles the Fat at Worms, but died during the journey near Modena. Little is known about his pontificate. He was venerated locally in the area where he died, and Pope Leo XIII confirmed his cult in 1891.
Why He Matters
Adrian III's veneration centuries after his death shows that holiness can be recognized even when a pope's reign is too brief for major accomplishments. Sometimes faithfulness in small things is enough.
