St. Callixtus I

Callixtus · ~217 – ~222

A former slave who became pope, expanded forgiveness for serious sinners, and was murdered during a Roman riot.

Callixtus had one of the strangest backstories of any pope. He was a slave who lost his master's money in a failed banking venture, tried to flee, was caught, and was sentenced to labor in the Sardinian mines. After his release, he worked his way up through the Roman Church and became pope around 217. He scandalized rigorists by declaring that the Church could forgive sins like adultery and apostasy after proper penance. His critic Hippolytus thought this was dangerously soft and set himself up as a rival bishop, making him arguably the first antipope. Callixtus also developed the great Christian catacombs on the Appian Way. He was killed during an anti-Christian mob action around 222.

From Slave to Shepherd

Callixtus' life reads like a novel. A slave, a failed banker, a convict, and then the leader of the entire Church. His willingness to extend forgiveness to serious sinners wasn't just theology; it probably came from knowing what it meant to need a second chance himself.

The Fight Over Forgiveness

Hippolytus accused Callixtus of being too lenient. But Callixtus' position won out and became Catholic teaching: the Church has the authority to forgive any sin. That principle still defines the sacrament of Reconciliation today.
