St. Eutychian
Eutychian · 275 – 283
Led the Church during a rare interval of peace before the Great Persecution.
Eutychian was pope from 275 to 283, a period when the Roman Empire was largely tolerant of Christians. Later tradition credits him with blessing agricultural produce at the altar, linking the Church's worship to the land and its seasons. He was buried in the catacombs of Callixtus.
Why He Matters
Eutychian served during a window of peace, a reminder that the early Church was not always under siege. Peaceful periods gave the Church room to develop its worship and organization, laying groundwork for what followed.
