Lowered the age for First Communion, reformed Church music, and launched a fierce campaign against theological modernism.

Pius X came from a poor family in northern Italy, and he never lost the instincts of a parish priest. He lowered the age for First Communion from twelve or thirteen down to about seven, believing children shouldn't be kept from the Eucharist. He overhauled the breviary, reformed sacred music by promoting Gregorian chant over operatic excess, and began the first modern codification of canon law. But his pontificate had a harder edge too. His encyclical Pascendi condemned modernism as the "synthesis of all heresies" and set up a system of surveillance within seminaries and universities that created a climate of suspicion. Some loyal Catholic scholars were unfairly targeted. He died in August 1914, just weeks after World War I began, reportedly heartbroken by the outbreak of violence he had tried to prevent.

Communion for Children

Before Pius X, most children waited years for their First Communion. He thought that was wrong. If a child could tell the difference between ordinary bread and the Eucharist, that child was ready. It was a simple change that moved millions of young Catholics closer to the sacraments.

The Anti-Modernist Campaign

Pius X saw real dangers in certain theological trends, but his response created collateral damage. The anti-modernist oath he required of clergy and the network of informants he established made Catholic intellectual life fearful and defensive for decades. Some of the scholars he suppressed were later vindicated by Vatican II.
