Traveled to France to crown Louis the Pious and strengthen the alliance between Rome and the Carolingian dynasty.
Stephen was a Roman nobleman who became pope in June 816. Within months he crossed the Alps to France, where he crowned Louis the Pious at Reims, reinforcing the partnership between the papacy and the Carolingian Empire. He brought with him a crown said to belong to Constantine. His pontificate lasted only seven months, but that single diplomatic act shaped the relationship between Church and empire for generations.
A Crown from Rome
Stephen IV crossed the Alps in winter to put a crown on Louis the Pious. It was a deliberate statement: emperors ruled, but the pope confirmed their authority. That idea would echo through centuries of European politics, long after both Stephen and Louis were forgotten.
