Clashed bitterly with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and reportedly died of grief upon hearing of the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin.
Uberto was from a noble Milanese family and served as archbishop of Milan. As pope from 1185, he was locked in conflict with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa over control of Church appointments and Italian politics. He spent his entire pontificate outside Rome, mostly in Verona. In October 1187, he received word that Jerusalem had fallen to Saladin. According to tradition, the news was so devastating that it contributed to his death later that month in Ferrara.

Urban III died in 1187, reportedly broken by the news of Jerusalem's fall. Whether grief actually killed him or simply coincided with his decline, the story captures the weight the medieval papacy placed on the Holy Land. For Urban, losing Jerusalem was not a distant political event. It felt like a personal and spiritual catastrophe.
