Scripture and Tradition
God’s word is handed on in writing and in the Church’s living faith.
Catholicism does not pit Bible against Tradition. Scripture is the word of God committed to writing; Tradition is the same deposit transmitted in the Church’s life, doctrine, and worship.
One sacred deposit
Apostolic preaching preceded the New Testament writings. The Church, led by the Spirit, discerned the canon and interprets Scripture within the living Tradition.
The Magisterium
The teaching office authentically interprets the word of God—not above Scripture and Tradition but as its servant, guarding what was received.
Lectio divina
Reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation allow Scripture to shape the disciple. The Word read in the Church stays tethered to doctrine and liturgy.
