Seeking spiritual mentorship

You were not meant to discern alone.

Spiritual direction, mature friendships in the parish, and formation groups help hear God amid noise. Mentors point to Christ, not themselves.

What to look for

Fidelity to the Church, holy life you can observe, and freedom from manipulation. Chemistry matters; so does competence.

How to ask

A simple request—“Would you be willing to meet occasionally to discuss prayer?”—respects their time. Clear expectations help.

Limits

Directors are not therapists or bosses. Serious mental health needs belong to professionals; direction addresses the soul’s relationship with God.

Try this week

  1. Identify one person two steps ahead spiritually; pray a week before asking.
  2. Prepare a short account of your current prayer life for a first meeting.
  3. If no one fits, inquire at your parish about diocesan lists or communities.
