Abercius lived in the late 2nd century as bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia (modern Turkey). His famous funerary inscription, discovered in 1883, describes his travels throughout the Christian world and mentions the Eucharist in symbolic language. He died around 200 and is considered an important witness to early Christian practices.
