A monk and scholar whose Ecclesiastical History of England earned him the title of father of English history.
Bede (673-735) spent his life at Jarrow monastery, becoming the most learned man of his age. His historical works, biblical commentaries, and scientific treatises preserved knowledge through the Dark Ages. He died while translating the Gospel of John.
