A father of Western monasticism whose Rule orders life around prayer, work, and hospitality.
Benedict (c. 480–547) fled Rome’s decadence for cave-dwelling prayer, then organized communities under a Rule balancing ora et labora. His wisdom on humility, stability, and the abbot’s care shaped European culture. He is patron of Europe.
