A hermit who built roads and bridges to help pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago.
Dominic de la Calzada (1019-1109) was a Spanish hermit who dedicated his life to helping pilgrims on the Way of St. James. After being rejected by monasteries, he settled in a forest along the pilgrimage route and began clearing paths, building bridges, and constructing roads. He founded the town that bears his name and built a church, hospital, and hostel for pilgrims. His practical service to travelers made the pilgrimage route safer and more accessible.
