English priest who founded the Gilbertine order, uniquely serving both monks and nuns.
Gilbert founded the Gilbertine order in Lincolnshire around 1130 (1083-1189). His order uniquely combined men and women religious in separate but connected communities. He personally oversaw the spiritual formation of both monks and nuns. He died at age 106, having established multiple monasteries across England.
