Italian deacon who assisted in establishing Christianity in northern England during the Anglo-Saxon period.
James accompanied Paulinus to England to help convert the Anglo-Saxons in the 7th century. When Paulinus returned to Kent after political changes, James remained in Northumbria to continue the mission. He served faithfully for decades, teaching and baptizing. He died peacefully, having established strong Christian communities.
