French nun who founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for education of poor girls.
Julie Billiart founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1804 (1751-1816). Despite being paralyzed for 22 years, she was miraculously cured and dedicated her life to educating poor girls. She faced opposition from both civil and church authorities but persevered. Her congregation spread worldwide, establishing schools for the poor.
