Antonio Ghislieri became Pope Pius V (1504-1572) and zealously defended Catholic orthodoxy during the Counter-Reformation. He implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent, standardized the Roman Missal, and organized the Holy League that defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto. His reforms strengthened Catholic practice worldwide.
