Confession (Reconciliation) 101
Naming sin, receiving mercy, starting again.
The sacrament of penance restores grace and peace after serious sin and strengthens the soul for ongoing conversion. It is Christ who forgives through the ministry of the priest.
Contrition and purpose of amendment
Sorrow for sin—because it offends God and harms the Church—and a firm resolve to avoid sin and its occasions are required for the sacrament’s fruit.
Confession and absolution
Naming sins with kind and number (as one can) to the best of one’s memory disposes the heart. Absolution is juridical and effective: sins are forgiven if the penitent is properly disposed.
Penance
The priest assigns a penance—prayer, fasting, or works of charity—to heal what sin wounded and to express gratitude for mercy received.
