St. Silverius

Deposed and exiled by Empress Theodora for refusing to reinstate a heretical patriarch, he died a martyr in exile.
Silverius was the son of Pope Hormisdas and became pope in 536 under Ostrogothic patronage. When Empress Theodora demanded he reinstate the Monophysite patriarch Anthimus, Silverius refused. The Byzantine general Belisarius, under Theodora's pressure, had Silverius deposed and exiled to the island of Ponza, where he died of starvation or mistreatment in 537. The Church recognizes him as a martyr.
Why He Matters
Silverius chose exile and death over compromising the faith. His story is one of the starkest examples of a pope standing against political power when doctrine was at stake.
