An African-descended hermit who became a beloved Franciscan cook and guardian, known for his mystical gifts and humility.
Benedict the Moor (1526-1589) was born to African parents in Sicily. After joining Franciscan hermits, he served as cook at Palermo friary and later became guardian despite being illiterate. His holiness, mystical experiences, and care for the poor made him beloved across social barriers.
