Pope who courageously defended papal authority during political conflicts with Holy Roman Emperor.
Giovanni Coniulo became Pope Gelasius II in 1118 during turbulent times (1060-1119). His papacy was marked by fierce opposition from Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. Despite being imprisoned and exiled, he maintained papal independence. He died in exile in France, having defended the Church against imperial interference.
