Roman soldier and member of the Theban Legion martyred for refusing to persecute Christians.
Valerian was a member of the legendary Theban Legion under Emperor Maximian (died 286). When ordered to persecute Christians, the entire legion refused. Led by Saint Maurice, they declared they would not attack fellow Christians. Despite threats and decimation, Valerian and his companions remained steadfast. They were massacred for their refusal to obey unjust orders.
